Pedra do Valado Mural: Biodiversity, Art and the Conservation of the Algarve's Reefs

Hello everyone!

We're continuing with the latest updates on the revamped flypontes.com. Today, I want to share with you the story of one of the most significant projects completed last year: the Pedra do Valado Mural.

This epic painting isn't just a work of art; it's a vibrant celebration and awareness-raising tool for the newly created "Pedra do Valado" Algarve Reef Marine Natural Park.

O projecto finalizado! Vista da praia de Armação de Pêra, onde o mural de 24 metros se integra na paisagem urbana. Arte urbana que celebra o mar do Algarve.

The Canvas: A 24-Meter Mural in the Heart of Armação de Pêra

This mural has a special location: it's painted on the façade facing Fishermen's Beach, in the Armação de Pêra Fish Market.

At 24 meters long and approximately 4.5 meters high, the work celebrates the richness and biodiversity of this protected ecosystem. With underwater colors and textures, the mural transports the viewer to the magic of this marine reef.

The central inspiration for this piece came from the urgent need to raise awareness for the conservation of the Pedra do Valado Mural and all the marine life the reef harbors.

Geographic Context and the Urgency of Conserving the Pedra do Valado Mural

The mural pays homage to a vast marine territory that stretches along the coasts of Silves, Lagoa, and Albufeira.

The work subtly highlights the importance of the Park's Integral Reserve, a critical area where access is strictly controlled—limited only to scientific research, environmental monitoring, and authorized visits. This restriction is essential to safeguard the most sensitive and threatened ecosystems found there.

"This painting is not just a work of art; it is an artistic window and a tool to raise awareness about the protected biodiversity of the Algarve."

Rich Flora and Fauna Represented

The foreground of the painting plunges us directly into the reef's marine life, showcasing some of its most notable inhabitants.

The protagonists are:

Seahorse: A delicate figure that symbolizes vulnerability. It serves as a reminder of the fact that it is an endangered species that occasionally forms small colonies in this location.

Grouper: Represented with its characteristic majesty, it is one of the largest bony fishes on the reef. Its appearance inspired an exclusive merchandise item: the Grouper T-shirt (LINK TO T-SHIRT IN STORE!).

Nudibranch (Sea Slug): Its inclusion brings a touch of color and complexity, representing the reef's less obvious diversity.

Octopus: A highly intelligent species, quite common in the Algarve, which adds movement and mystery to the seabed.

Flora also has its place. The mural's background is enriched by gorgonian gardens and communities of brown and calcareous algae, essential for the reef's health and structure.

Immerse Yourself in the Process: The Creation Video

Transforming this idea, scale, and message into a work of urban art was an exciting challenge. To allow you to experience the process almost in real time, I've added the full creation video to the project page.

Seeing it in motion is the best way to understand the evolution of each stage!

In short, this mural is an artistic window into the Algarve's protected biodiversity, celebrating the life and conservation of the Algarve Reef "Pedra do Valado."
